Metallica will always remind me of high school gym class.
During my high school years in the late 1980s, we had three choices for PE. We could take Team PE, which focused on team sports. Or we could take Individual PE, which focused on sports that were solo events rather than, you know, team. The third option was Personal Development, which focused on weight training and running. I wasn’t much of an athlete, team or solo, so I opted for Personal Development.
That’s also what all the metal heads picked. I was more of a new wave/alternative kind of guy, but in the context of gym class, we all managed to get along. But the metal heads always got to control the tape deck, and that meant we always listened to Metallica. At the time, the band hadn’t had their big commercial breakthrough with …And Justice For All, so the soundtrack for my daily workouts was a rotation of their pre-MTV albums: Kill ‘Em All, Ride The Lightning, and Master Of Puppets.
Yes, we were pumping iron to heavy metal.
Fast forward to 2017. Metallica has announced a massive super deluxe box set for Master Of Puppets that would have made the dudes in my gym class go berserk. This thing has ten CDs, three LPs, a cassette, and two DVDs! There will also be a 3CD special edition for the more frugal Metallica fans.
