When Whitesnake had their major commercial breakthrough in 1987, I was in high school. I had no idea that the band had six albums before I ever saw the video for “Here I Go Again.” I didn’t know who David Coverdale was, or that he’d been in Deep Purple before. Hell, I don’t think in 1987 I even knew a single song by Deep Purple.
I suspect that’s pretty typical of the millions of new fans Whitesnake earned from their mega hit self-titled album, which turns 30 this year. (In Europe, the album title was actually 1987.) In honor of that milestone, the album is receiving a deluxe expanded release similar to the one their fellow 80s hard rockers Def Leppard received recently as Hysteria also hit the big 3-0. 1987 30th Anniversary Edition will be released on October 6 in various configurations, including a 4CD/1 DVD super deluxe edition.
