All-Star Roy Orbison Show Gets 30th Anniversary Reissue

It was near the end of Roy Orbison’s life when I discovered him for the first time. In the late 80s, I was starting to expand my musical tastes beyond what was on the radio and was beginning to develop an appreciation for classic artists. When the Travelling Wilburys, the supergroup of all supergroups, came out in 1988, Orbison was the collaborator I was least familiar with. When he died later that same year, it was shocking to me if only from his association with other legends.

When Orbison’s posthumous Mystery Girl came out in 1989, I bought the cassette. At some point later, I added a multi-disc “Best Of” collection to my music library. And in 2014, feeling nostalgic, I also picked up the reissued deluxe edition of Mystery Girl, with an additional disc of bonus tracks.

I’m not a diehard Roy Orbison fan, though, so between the Wilburys, the greatest hits and Mystery Girl, I felt like I had his music adequately represented in my collection.

But then there’s Black & White Night, a 1987 all-star Roy Orbison tribute concert featuring the man himself performing with Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, Tom Waits, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Jennifer Warnes and J.D. Souther, and T-Bone Burnett, all backed by Elvis Presley’s legendary TCB band. The concert has been released in multiple audio and video formats over the years, and remains essential listening and viewing.

Now, Sony Music’s Legacy Recordings is reissuing the show on CD/DVD and CD/BluRay. Black & White Night 30 arrives February 24, featuring for the first time the entire concert in its original running order as well as previously unreleased performances and behind the scenes footage.
