Sing Street Nomination Puts The Spotlight On An Overlooked 2016 Gem

When the 2017 Golden Globes nominees were announced this morning, among the surprises was the inclusion of “Sing Street” as one of the five contenders for Best Motion Picture: Musical or Comedy. It’s a small film most people probably haven’t even heard of. Either that, or they mistakenly think it is the similarly titled but terrible looking animated film “Sing.” (Which itself is nominated as Best Motion Picture: Animated.)

“Sing Street” is actually a 2016 film from the writer/director of “Once” that tells the age old story of a boy who starts a band in order to impress a girl. The film is set in Dublin in the mid-80s, with a soundtrack of both new-wave hits of the era and new songs inspired by the era.

“Sing Street” is available on DVD/Blu-ray as well as on popular streaming services including Netflix. Check out the trailer below.
