Making a great tribute album can be tricky. (I wrote all about it here.)
Personally, I’m a fan of the approach taken by Juliana Hatfield on Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John. I generally like the idea of one single artist doing an entire album of songs by one other single artist.
Alternatively, there’s tribute albums where you get a variety of artists covering a single artist’s songs. That can be fun, but I think it is much more interesting to hear what can be done with the one-on-one approach.
Still, my cardinal rule for anyone doing cover songs is that you must make the songs your own. Otherwise, what’s the point?
Unfortunately, Juliana Hatfield seems to break that rule a bit too often on this tribute album, opting to remain earnestly faithful to the originals more often than not. How you feel about covers (and Olivia Newton-John for that matter) will definitely impact how much you enjoy this particular effort.
